How To Take A Staycation For The Summer

2020 has been a year of many changes and more than a few canceled plans, but that doesn’t mean the summer can’t be fun! People across the country are finding lots of creative ways to take a “vacation” while still staying safe from the pandemic. Make sure your summer isn’t a bummer and try taking a staycation at home this year! Here’s a list of some of my favorite ideas for a staycation summer:

Have A Spa Day At Home

Treat yourself! Take some time to relax and have a spa day at home. The stresses of the year have definitely gotten to all of us so it’s important to fully unwind every once in a while. Try lighting your favorite candles, fill up the tub with bubbles, put on a soothing face mask, wrap your hair up into a hydrating hair treatment, or give yourself a mani/pedi.  Self-care is all about making yourself feel your absolute best!

Go Camping In Your Own Backyard

Take a camping trip with the family…in your own backyard! Lots of national and state parks have been closed for months but you can always bring the adventure home. Set up some tents, build a bonfire, make some s’mores and spend time telling your favorite fireside stories to each other. Even though we have all been isolated in our households together, it is important to sit down and truly take the time to talk to your family.

Try a New Art Project

Now is the perfect time to try something that you have never tried before! Pull out the art supplies and get creative with a new art project. Get the kids involved and make it a family activity that you can all do together. Since we are all still mostly stuck at home, maybe try painting something around the house to add some color or rearrange the furniture to change up the scenery. Keeping each day fresh and new is vital to staying active in 2020!

Take a Day Trip and See The Sights

Have you seen all the famous sights in your state? Pull out the map and take a day trip to a place you have never been to before! Taking a full vacation right now is difficult for everyone but taking a day trip is just enough to get a taste of one. Make sure you know and follow your state’s regulations or safety measures no matter where you travel. Getting out of the house for a short adventure is great for you as long as you stay healthy and safe about it.

Host Your Own Film Festival

One of the best things to do in the summertime is to go to the movies, but since the movie theaters aren’t reopened yet we can make our own at home! If you have a projector, get out an old bedsheet and hang it up in the backyard to make your own movie projection screen. Fancy equipment isn’t necessary to make it fun though! Pick out your favorite movies, make a bowl of popcorn, curl up on the couch, and make a marathon of it. Rent a new movie and try creating your own movie theater experience! Making a night at home fun just became a lot easier than you think.

Go On a Hike You Have Never Tried

New Mexico is full of some of the best hiking trails! Take a day and go on a local hike that you have never tried before. Getting out in the open, fresh air is a surefire way to make anyone feel better. Please also make sure to look into which trails are open and safe to be on, not every trail or park has been reopened and it is important that you follow your state’s rules.

Try Hosting Your Own Cooking Class

Have you been missing going out to your favorite local restaurants? Try making your favorite dishes at home! Host your own cooking class with a few close friends or family and learn how to make something new together. Lookup a gourmet recipe or cooking tutorial from your favorite chef and see how it turns out, you may be surprised what you come up with!

Make Your Own Game or Sports Tournament

Make it a game night! Whether you like sports or board games, try planning your own tournament with the family. Make your own 2020 Olympics in the backyard or get out your favorite games and challenge one another to a gaming championship. Make it extra challenging and even have a small prize for the winner!

Hold a Yoga Retreat At Home or Try a New Workout Routine

Keep it active! Hold a yoga retreat at home with a couple of friends or even try out a new workout routine. There are lots of yoga routines and workouts that you can access online for free or you can even make up your own. Try taking it outside and breathe in some fresh air while you exercise. A big part of keeping ourselves healthy these days is staying active and getting enough exercise each and every day!

Have a Picnic in the Park

Have a picnic! Public parks are a great spot to get out while staying socially distant from other groups. Make your favorite lunch and pack it up to take to your local park. Some parks have remained closed for specific reasons so you may have to see which parks are accessible to you locally. Try to keep large groups to a minimum, 6 people or less is the recommended group size currently so keep that in mind as well when planning public hangouts.

Be a Tourist in Your Own Town

Become a tourist in your own town! Chances are you probably haven’t done all the tourist activities that your city has to offer. Explore your town with a fresh set of eyes and try discovering things that you haven’t before. Always remember to stay safe and wear a mask while you are out and about as well. Although the things we can do right now may be limited, there’s lots more to do in our cities than we might think!

Extra Tips for Making it A Great Staycation:

  • Turn your phone off for the day!
  • Take a social media break
  • Turn off the TV, computer and video games
  • Make it a day of NO working!
  • Let go of your daily worries for the day
  • Leave the mess for tomorrow and enjoy your day
  • Make it family time!
  • Listen and enjoy each other’s company

Summer 2020 is going to be very different from many of our usual summer experiences, but we can always make the best of it. Stay safe and have an amazing staycation!
